Vintage Table

Last summer I popped into my favorite local consignment shop.  I should never do this, especially just after vowing to NOT BUY ANYMORE DISHES!!  We all know how well that works don't we?  Anyway, there in the very back, was this amazing set of dishes with my name written all over them.
A complete set with place settings for twelve!
The set included 14 cups and saucers too and there was even sugar in the sugar bowl!  Like I said, "how could I pass it up?"  Even though, as you tell from the next photo, I barely had any room to store it.

I am a real sucker for Bavarian and Czech plates that have a dainty edge like these.  So sweet with tiny baby pink and baby blue flowers.  Could be perfect for a baby shower luncheon.
I love the colors and figured it would be easy to just throw them down with some pink placemats and blue napkins and have a sweet table.  WRONG!  I tried every color of pink and blue and they just looked bad.
About two weeks ago I visited Old Time Pottery and carried one of the dishes with me to try to find something that would work.  Surprisingly, I found lavender (they call it Hydrangea) placemats that matched perfectly.  Apparently, what I thought was a blue and pink flower design, turns out was it pale lavender instead of blue.  After that discovery, I decided to try something other than baby pink with the napkins.
TJ just happened to have these Ralph Lauren burgundy napkins.
The napkins pulled out the darker pink and made a pleasing combination.  Not at all what I pictured when I purchased the dishes, but I think I like it.
After putting all the china and linens together, I pulled out my Fostoria Ballet glassware to complete the vintage feel.

Candelabras from Classy Flea in Marietta.  Just old brass, spray-painted white, but I love them anyway.

The individual flower holders were found at the Vancouver Botanical Garden's gift shop on vacation two year ago.

  2. Oh I just LOVE those dishes!!

What a lucky girl you are, I also really like those flower holders, those are so dainty and delicate! Very Pretty!!

I have the same problem as you....it is SO very hard to not buy more dishes. I keep saying OK I must sell a set for each new set that comes home. Sadly, there has only been 2 sets leave for the 5 that I brought home.

Anyway, thank you for sharing and I hope you have a wonderful evening!

  3. I think the only way we can really avoid buying beautiful dishes like those you found is to stop shopping!! You found some very pretty dishes and I think you paired them nicely with the linens too. But I absolutely love the swan centerpiece--can't believe you found it in Home Goods. I must go back there! 4. Oh, you had me laughing at the impossibility of resisting more dishes. I know I must and yet... You had such a find that there was no choice at all! You really did a wonderful job finding the right colors for them. Lovely table, filled with such charm.

  5. Yesterday I sold my Fostoria Betsy Ross Milk Glass and two of my tomato pitchers with an odd number of glasses... I must admit it was hard to see them go. It is much more fun to buy than it is to sell! I am looking for more of my clear frosted chargers. I have only found a few when unpacking. They would be perfect under your new set of dishes....would create a very soft look! Thought of them the second I saw your new set!

  6. Diane, how amazing that they would have a 12 piece placesetting. Where I live you would find nothing like that. I love the look of this table with all the crystal. What genious to spray paint a brass candelabra! Joni

  7. OOh, love your new china.. totally. Who would have thought to add the lavender color.. wow. it's perfect. My mom had some flower holders similar from when she was 14. I wish I had them now.

We are on week 3 of the violet in the copper pot. Is copper bad for plants? It's not planted in the teapot, it's in a little pot inside of the pot. I have such an ungreen thumb.
have a great week.. xo marlis

  8. All that glass is just dazzling on your table. The lavender does compliment your beautiful dishes very nicely. So lucky to find such a big set!

  9. I'm going to 2nd your motion that the burgundy napkins really add to the setting by pulling out that deeper pink. Good eye on your part!!! Way to go!!! I bought a pair of shoes once that looked blue under the fluorescent lighting in the store, but turned out to be periwinkle. I was mad at first (because I had already been prancing around in them at home to "break them in"), but then found 5 or 6 outfits they looked good with, so I was OK. The china is really pretty, and I can't believe you even entertained the notion of not buying anymore dishes. For shame! That's not the Tablescaper Way!!! :-) We have a code of ethics that includes buying dishes and decorative accoutrements under ALL circumstances! :-) Very nicely done!!!!!!!!

  10. What a lovely table and your dishes are such a great find. It's pretty rare to find so many place settings and I know you will put them to good use. We all have too many dishes and I tell myself I won't buy anymore either. It would help if they'd stop making such pretty new designs.

I also like the candelabra so much, but what I really, really want are those mini vases.
    So cute!
    Thanks for sharing :)
