The Real Story of Living Through a Remodel

Living in our house through a major remodel was a financial choice.  To move out and pay rent, would have put our remodel out of reach.  This is the "other" side of a remodel.
In our current bedroom, the carpet had to be torn up when the roof leaked into the room. No sense in fixing it b/c it is all coming up once we move back to our master bedroom.
 Sharing my dish closet.
 The hallway outside the bedroom.

 The living room
 Waiting to be hauled away.
The second dishwasher waiting to be installed
Master bath cabinets with the guest room mattress.
Decisions daily.  This is the master bath tile.
 The old microwave
No counter space anywhere yet
Temporary counter space
Pantry doors waiting to be finished and installed

 Brown paper and cardboard everywhere
 Half finished walls
Every room is covered in dust

The master bedroom after we moved out

Open to the heat of the attic space
This is one of the master bath windows.  They were installed through the floor into the garage below to keep the front of the house symmetrical, then they built a box around them.
These windows are coming out to be replaced with windows we can actually use!

The old shower drain, open to the garage below
The view from just about every window in the house.

Open the beautiful front door and this is the view
Piles of stuff in every corner
Dressing mirror that doesn't fit in the guest room
Unfinished walls in our temporary bedroom

The garage
Everything including the kitchen sink on the deck.

I do laundry on the deck
The view from the deck

Doors to the patio
The other side of those doors waiting for the mason

The view from the street
I can't imagine life will ever be normal again.

  5. I am thinking of all the patience you had to have saved up to be able to reach this point without snapping!!! And while still in recovery mode to boot....girl, you deserve all the gold medals around Michael Phelps's neck! I don't know HOW you're doing it, but I applaud it standing ovation style!!! Especially for the doing laundry on the deck part!!!!!!!!

I understand your choice to stay and live through the inconvenience and mess. The cost to live in a hotel or rent an apartment would have seriously cut into your remodeling funds. The up side of being there is that you have a bird's eye view of everything going on and can be quickly consulted if need be.

God bless y'all!!! I don't know that I could have endured as you have! Take care!

  6. Oh, my, you have truly demonstrated the reality of a remodel! Don't you wish you could just "wiggle your noise " like in "I Dream Of Jeannie" and have it all put together? Just take a deep breath, keep the goal in your mind and think of the next holiday when you go throw open your doors to visitors and have them gasp at the results! I promise, it will have been worth all the chaos. Hang in there! Rosie @ The Magic Hutch

  7. You must have nerves of steel with so many things going on at the same time...I know it will be well worth it, once everything is done...it is just the chaos until then that would drive me nuts! Are you done with the rehab, yet? Hope it has helped.
Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend.

  10. Thanks so much for stopping by!! I can't believe that you only paid that amount at Habit for Humanity for those things! There is a store about 25 minutes away from us and I keep wanting to go there but never seem to get there. I will have to make a point out of it now that my husband is retiring....

  14. I cannot imagine how hard it is to live through a home remodel, but it looks like you are getting through it well. I hope you were able to find a spot for the dressing mirror because it has a fun antique look. The ending result is going to be worth living through the remodel, and I look forward to seeing pictures of your new home.
