Dish Inventory

Pssstt..... come peek in my dish closet.
My sweet husband converted a linen closet into this awesome dish closet.  He put a strand of lights around the door that come on when the door opens.  He does little things like that all the time and it makes me so happy.
I have been taking inventory of all my stuff for insurance purposes so I have spent this week taking photos of all the dishes, linens, crafting, gemstones and findings and crafting tools.  I won't bore you will those specific photos, but to celebrate the Tablescaper's 3rd anniversary, here's part of where everything is stored.

Napkins

China Cabinets Contents

After converting the linen closet, which I promptly filled, he offered to convert one side of the walk-in guest room closet.  The closet is about 5 feet deep and had a rod on your left and right as you walked in.  I placed a large storage unit in the center and hubby converted one side into shelves, leaving the other side with a rod for guests clothing (for now).   This closet houses all my table decorations, candle sticks, platters, vases, cloches, and glassware.

My husband Grandfather's old desk in the guest room is home to most of my candles and napkins rings.

Other chests in the guest and dining rooms from our collective Grandmothers provides storage for more napkins, tablecloths and placemats.

Just wondering if any of you have thought about what might happen if you had to make a claim on your homeowners insurance for all your precious collections?  I have been assured by my agent that they will pay for the home contents up to the limits we set, but I am very antsy about it since I have so much stuff that a normal homeowner wouldn't have.  I mean, how many people would make a claims for the collections we all have?  My plan is to take photos of all my dish, paper crafting, gemstones etc., so I have proof to back up the numbers I would turn in if something unfortunate were to happen.   If any of you have thought about this and have a solution please pass it on to me.
Happy third anniversary to the Tablescaper and thank you hosting Seasonal Sundays!

  6. Hi Dianne! Your husband sounds so supportive! Your collection looks so well organized. When I bought home decor items for my staging business, I called my insurance man and he made sure I had enough coverage. That's a great idea to take photos. We should all do that. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Good Girl, taking pictures...
Lost mom's diamond earrings before we even got them insured! Still hoping but not counting on them showing up...
I should be taking pictures of my dishes, too! Just so much more fun to play with them ...

  10. Hi, Dianne. I've taken pictures of my jewelry, and several months ago started taking pictures of all the dishes, etc., because I fear our insurance company would never believe the amount of stuff bloggers have, LOL!! And I've been trying to label pictures with when I bought them, what I paid for them, and where I bought them, but because I like details like that. :) I have a folder in my computer called Inventory--I'm keeping all the pictures there. But it's a huge job, isn't it? There are so many things we use and don't even think about...Good to do, though.

You have lots of pretty things. Thanks for sharing your storage ideas and solutions. ~Zuni

  11. Hi Dianne. i've hopped over from Seasonal Sunday and boy am I glad that I have!! I have been worried about storage and had never thought of getting those wire racks that you have. The lovely china that I used on my 'What's for Tea' http://pembrokeshirelass.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/whats-for-tea.html blog has been stored for years in a cool cupboard where there's no vibration but when I opened the door to get them several were broken. I was heart broken. I think that I'll join your followers and thanks again for the ideas. Joan

  17. Good advice to think about insurance. Not me, but so many of you have several, priceless collections. Just think what one complete of set of china cost? And then multiply that! I wish my husband was a bit more understanding of my storage issues. His enthusiasm for my tablescaping lasted about a month. Oh well, I'm not all that excited about his golf game either!

  18. Such great organization! I enjoyed seeing where you store it all. It is wise that you keep an extra copy of your inventory and photos somewhere outside of your home. My brother and I have a copy at each other's homes.

  21. If you have run out of closets to convert but your husband is hankering to work on one, I'll inbox you my home address and he can come work on 2 or 3 of mine! :-) That's wonderful that he took the time and energy to do that for you. Adding the automatic light was an extra great touch! As you may have seen before, I have a computerized catalogue (Flip Alubm) on which I store my inventory including individual photos, descriptions, quantities, etc. I have this specifically for insurance purposes as well as keeping my thoughts organized as I plan tablescapes. You are quite right that most "normal" people don't have this many dishes and all the decorative accoutrement. It's a good thing to have it as a matter of record by either photographing or videographing it all once a year or so as the collection grows. I guess you could always refer directly to your blog, though, for proof! :-)
