Pining for Silver Pine

Christmas morning is layed back and relaxing at our house since there are no small children.  As the day goes on, I get very busy with all the meal prep.
Luckily, like many of the other tablescapers, my table was ready early.
It started with the Kent Silver Pine dishes I found in Oct at an antique mall.  It was love at fist sight, but I didn't buy them right any b/c I thought they only had the platters and serving pieces that were displayed.
Later that day when I went back to take additional photos of the platters and my friend said, "Did you see this tag that says, EIGHT FULL PLACE SETTINGS!".  No, I didn't see it and I was so glad she pointed it out to me.  Within minutes, I was all over these dishes.
The pattern is Kent Silver Pine made in Japan.  There are a few salad plates by Narumi, also called Silver Pine.  I was unable to find any information on either manufacturer, but the plates are identical.
I fell in love with the elegant, simple lines, muted color pallet, and the tablescaping wheels started turning.

I wanted to use fresh greenery and The Hunter brought home some to try, but unfortunately, he brought it home in Nov and with all the warm weather, by Christmas, it was way past it's prime.

I was fortunate to find beautiful artificial greenery that I loved.  The candles were a last minute addition from Pottery Barn purchased at 7:00 AM on Dec 23.  Crazy to be at the mall on Dec 23, right? Crazy like a fox!  Marked down twice!   You may notice in the following photos that as they burned, the light started glowing through the bark.
Place mats from Tuesday Morning, Ralph Lauren napkins from Home Goods.  The chargers have a wood pattern and were ordered from Save-on-Crafts.com.   I wasn't sure if silver and brown would work together, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the combination.
The pine cones of all sizes belonged to my MIL and when she decided to clean out 40 years of accumulated collecting, I became the lucky new owner.  I struggled to get the largest pine cones to stand upright, but as you will see, I finally won that battle!
I discovered that the little aluminum bottom from a votive candle fit perfectly on the bottom of the pine cone allowing it to stand upright.  Candlestick from Tuesday Morning and the globe is Shannon Crystal.  I love how the pattern echos the pine cones.
My newest flatware:  Sheraton by Oneida.
Mercury glass votives tucked into the greenery.

My daughter Melissa brought one of my Granddogs, Murphy, to visit for Christmas dinner.
I hope your Christmas was filled with family love like mine was.  I will be joining the following parties:

Tablescape Thursday
Seasonal Sunday

  3. Oh, wow, Dianne...all the photos are pretty, but that evening shot toward the windows of the dishes and stemware all lined up is gorgeous!!! I love photos like that! They really show off the richness of the table and the fullness of the extended centerpiece. How lucky is that that you got a second chance at finding those beautiful dishes?!?!?!!! It always pays to take a second look!!! And even better if you have a second pair of eyes with you to help make such discoveries!!! :-) I love the pattern. They can be Christmas, but not necessarily. I can see using those from November on through February and beyond! I love the napkin placement and the way you curved it to mirror the curve of the pine. Very clever, young lady! SUPER gorgeous candlesticks with the rose bowls on top!!!!!!! Love that! All of the woodsy elements are great with the crystal and china and silver...it's just beautiful! You said you wondered if silver and brown would work together, and OF COURSE they do!!! Happy New Year, and congratulations on your fabulous new purchases! This is gorgeous!!!

  13. Dianne - I absolutely love this tablescape. It was planned exquisitely down the the tiniest detail. I, too, own Narumi china and I adore how light and thin it is. My pattern is Mountain Cherry. My understanding is that the company "Mikasa" has never actually made china, but bought it from manufacturers in Japan and sold it, under the Mikasa name. Apparently, Narumi was one of those. Replacements has many pieces of your pattern, if you should need more. Happy New Year!

  17. Stunning and natural beauty! I have a similar china from Narumi called Olympia. Narumi is evidently a side of Noritake, or that's what I've gathered in my brief googling. you have exquisite taste and balance sense. Thanks for sharing your creations. Julie W.

  18. This pattern was our everyday dishes when I was growing up. I have distinct memories of my dad sitting at the kitchen table, smoking a cigarette, and drinking his coffee from the coffee cups with pine cones on the sides. There were 11 of us, so very few pieces survived. I always loved the pattern. It is simple and elegant, and ours were paired wth equally simple and elegant mid century stainless. Thanks for the memories!

  20. I recently downsized my mother’s belongings to move her into Independent/Assisted Living. She wanted me to have her 12 place setting set of Kent Silver Pine china that belonged to my Tennessee grandmother. At first I resisted, as I’m trying myself to have less clutter in my life. I decided to keep it and after seeing your lovely Christmas tablescape, I am excited to create my own using yours for inspiration. Mirror, mercury glass and simple yet beautiful pine cones are things I already have around the house. My mother will be so pleased to have Christmas dinner using her mother’s china. Christmas traditions and creating memories are important.

  21. Dianne,
I just came across your post featuring the Kent, Silver Pine china. My 93 year old mother-in-law recently gave me her complete set of this china she had received as a gift early in her marriage. I have it displayed in my dining room but haven't ever used it. After seeing your lovely table set with it I am anxious to start putting it to use. Thanks so much for inspiring me and sharing your beautiful pictures as inspiration.
